We discuss free subsemigroups in solvable and elementary amenable groups improving earlier results of Milnor-Wolf, Rosenblatt, Alperin and Osin about uniform exponential growth for these groups.

Notes on Uniform Exponential Growth and Tits Alternative
Remark 1.2. Uniform exponential growth for solvable non-virtually nilpotent groups was proved independently by Osin and byWilson. The existence of a uniform constant C(d) as in Theorem 1.1 for solvable groups is very striking since it implies the well known Lehmer conjecture concerning the Mahler measure of algebraic integers. However for virtually solvable non-virtually nilpotent groups we onl...
متن کاملUniform growth of groups acting on Cartan-Hadamard spaces
We say that Γ has uniform exponential growth if Ent Γ > 0. In [11], remarque 5.12, M. Gromov raised the question whether exponential growth always implies uniform exponential growth. The answer is negative, indeed, in [14] J.S. Wilson gave examples of finitely generated groups of exponential growth and non uniform exponential growth. Nevertheless, exponential growth implies uniform exponential ...
متن کاملUniform Growth of Polycyclic Groups
The Milnor-Wolf Theorem characterizes the finitely generated solvable groups which have exponential growth; a finitely generated solvable group has exponential growth iff it is not virtually nilpotent. Wolf showed that a finitely generated nilpotent by finite group has polynomial growth; then extended this by proving that polycyclic groups which are not virtually nilpotent have expontial growth...
متن کاملThe entropy of solvable groups
We prove that any finitely generated solvable group of zero entropy contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index. In particular, any finitely generated solvable group of exponential growth is of uniformly exponential growth.
متن کاملGroups with no coarse embeddings into hyperbolic groups
We introduce an obstruction to the existence of a coarse embedding of a given group or space into a hyperbolic group, or more generally into a hyperbolic graph of bounded degree. The condition we consider is “admitting exponentially many fat bigons”, and it is preserved by a coarse embedding between graphs with bounded degree. Groups with exponential growth and linear divergence (such as direct...
